Is it realistic to mobilize 160 thousand people —Chmut's comment
In late October, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, said that over the next three months, more than 160,000 people are to be drafted. However, Taras Chmut, the head of the Come Back Alive Foundation, said that such figures are detached from reality.
Taras Chmut said this in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
How brigades are manned in the Armed Forces
Taras Chmut explained that in the Armed Forces, brigades can sometimes be staffed by 50%, and some may have only 15-25 people. In his opinion, it is necessary to mobilize almost three times as many.
"If you ask a commander how many riflemen and infantry are needed, there can be 15-25 people in a company. But on paper, you seem to have a lot of people. You have a complete headquarters, rear, communications, UAV operators, snipers, scouts. You have some artillery, some mortar operators, and so on, but no infantry. And we are not talking about quality, we have not been talking about quality for a long time. We are talking about some people. And these numbers are just numbers. They are very detached from reality. 500 thousand is an adequate figure," Chmut emphasized.
Why mobilization in Ukraine has stalled
According to Chmut, Ukraine has serious problems with the mobilization process, primarily because of the failed communication between the government and society.
"We are completely losing the information field to the Russians and those who play along inside the country. Go to YouTube and watch the channels. Absolute manipulation, distortion of facts, hyperbolization of problems, leveling the positive. Efforts to divide the society. This all stems from deep-rooted issues in the country that, unfortunately, have gone unresolved for years, even decades," Chmut explained.
In addition, corruption within the country irritates society. And those who want to work for the state often face competition and "survival".
The military commissar of Odesa is retiring for medical reasons, despite holding tens of millions in hryvnias, dollars, and other currencies, along with a villa in Spain, and yet nothing is being done about it. This angers society. We are facing a severe crisis in state governance. No one wants to work in government. The state has built a system where either those who already know how to navigate it or very courageous individuals, whom I do not envy, take on these roles. These people come in, are quickly sidelined, and eventually leave," Chmut expressed his opinion.
As a reminder, MP Oleksii Honcharenko recently stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are experiencing an acute shortage of officers.
Also, military psychologist Andriy Kozinchuk stated that there is an acute shortage of soldiers in the brigades, and that the manning up is extremely slow.
And a number of experts analyzed how mobilization in Ukraine might proceed in the future and whether women will be drafted into the army.
